This is a great bit of nostalgia that has turned up on YouTube, 20 minutes of good quality footage from UK Fresh 86 [Update - it may not be UK Fresh, see the comments Section. If you can shed any light on it then please leave a comment]. It's taken from a TV show broadcast at the time and it occasionally cuts to hosts Andy Kershaw and Janice Long interviewing the organiser (and Street Sounds founder), Morgan Khan. Andy and Janice were both BBC radio DJ’s so I’d hazard a guess this was shown on BBC2.
The footage includes performances from DJ Cheese (the world DMC champion in 1986) alongside Word of Mouth, as well as Mantronik performing with both T La Rock and then MC Tee and then lastly some footage of Faze One. Some of the best highlights come from Morgan Khan with his misguided analysis of hip hop no longer being political, claims that Faze One would sell lots of records in America and his casual gum chewing that made me want to knock it right out of his mouth!
Sadly this is not from UK Fresh. Khan has since admitted that it was a major oversight on his part NOT to film the event.
ReplyDeleteThis footage is from a BBC programme part of a special music night. Either this section or the whole night was entitled 'Rock Around The Clock' as I recorded this bit onto VHS at the time.
Apparently there IS some footage of UK Fresh 86 recorded by a punter at the gig with a secreted camcorder. He said he was going to upload it to Youtube then got all freaky and said he was going to sell it and now has strangely disappeared (source: the UK Fresh 86 Facebook page).
However, the image of the b-boys with lob-ons in tight blue trackies has stayed with me necessarily for nigh on 27 years now. And Khan's cow-like chewing still grates.
I meant "unnecessarily" *shudder*
DeleteHey Repo, thanks for the info. Its many years since I listened to the UK Fresh audio so I didnt notice that it wasn't the same. Given that the line up is part of the UK Fresh headliners, I can only assume that this program was recorded at almost the same time.
DeleteI seem to recall one of the presenters saying it was from Wembley too, so it would seem to be connected. I'm purely using logic here and don't actually 'know' anything! You've got me curious now, and it would be nice to find out the facts.
P.S. I liked you're cow chewing analogy ;)
I remember seeing this when it was on the telly. I recorded it too, think I still may have it somewhere but alas, I no longer have a VCR to play it on.
